Labour Party leader David Shearer says this year's Budget will be for the boardroom, not the smoko room.

Mr Shearer has highlighted what he would do in his first Budget if he becomes prime minister at the next election.

He took aim at the National Government, saying the wealth gap betweeen the top 10% and the rest is widening faster in New Zealand than in most Western countries.

Mr Shearer said Labour will make the change to a prosperous society through measures like its new energy policy, a capital gains tax and putting food in schools.
