Christine Rankin, a former families commissioner, is making a move into national politics.
Ms Rankin has been a member of the Conservative Party's board since July last year and is taking up the chief executive's role.
She says she sees enormous potential in the right-wing party.
It is not known if Ms Rankin will be a candidate for the Conservatives at the general election in 2014.
