Petrol tax increases due to tax cuts - Labour

12:03 pm on 17 May 2013

Labour says three petrol tax increases are needed only because the Government gave top income earners big tax cuts in 2010.

Petrol will rise by three cents per litre on 1 July this year, next year and the year after.

Finance spokesperson David Parker said Labour will be opposing a bill on the matter, which is expected to be passed under urgency on Saturday.

Mr Parker said National gave overly generous tax cuts to big income earners and is now making everyone else pay to pull the Government accounts out of deficit.
