9:23 pm on 5 June 2013

Parliament has passed legislation stopping prisoners from being compensated for wrongful treatment in jail until any debt to victims is repaid and any outstanding legal aid is settled.

The existing Prisoners and Victims Claims Act expires at the end of June.

Legislation to replace it passed its third and final reading in Parliament by 101 votes to 18 on Wednesday night with the support of National, Labour, New Zealand First, ACT and United Future.
