The Minister of State for Timor hopes New Zealand will support the country becoming part of the Commonwealth.
Jose Luis Gutterres said the Commonwealth is an important forum and will give Timor the chance to express its views and hear what other countries have to say about international issues.
Mr Gutteres is in New Zealand with President Taur Matan Ruak, who was elected last year.
