Greens want faster action on transgender inmate policy

9:00 am on 7 July 2013

The Green Party says a review of prison policy for transgender inmates is taking too long and the delay is putting those prisoners' lives at risk.

Lobby group Equal Justice Project has released research it says shows the country's prisons are breaching human rights by denying transgender prisoners medical treatment, and housing them by their birth gender.

Corrections Minister Anne Tolley says the department is reviewing its policy.

But Green MP Jan Logie says the Ombudsman raised the same issues at the start of 2012 and Mrs Tolley is taking too long to act.

Ms Logie says until there is a change, transgender prisoners are at risk of sexual assault and other violence from fellow inmates.
