Maori Party annual meeting this weekend

10:35 am on 12 July 2013

Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell says it is likely the question of whether the party will join forces with the Mana Movement will be considered this weekend.

The party's annual meeting starts in Whakatane on Friday night.

The hui is being held earlier than usual so the Maori Party can deal with changes to its leadership.

Co-leader Pita Sharples and president Pem Bird will stand down on Saturday and new leaders will be elected.

Mr Flavell says as far as he knows, he is the only person standing for Dr Sharples' positon.

He says whether to accept an invitiation from Mana Movement leader Hone Harawira to join forces is not on the agenda, but it is likely to be talked about.

Mr Flavell says once the hui is out of the way, the party will start preparing for next year's general election.
