Govt 'listening to feedback' on safety legislation

12:05 pm on 18 July 2013

Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges has told a West Coast minerals forum the Government is listening to concerns about a proposed new regulatory regime for mining health and safety.

The minister spoke in Greymouth a day after police announced no individual criminal charges would be laid over the deaths of 29 men in the Pike River mine disaster.

Mr Bridges told the forum on Thursday that a bill he recently introduced to Parliament will improve health and safety in the mining industry.

The legislation is part of the Government's response to the Pike River disaster.

Mr Bridges said concerns have been raised about the scope of the mining operations that will be affected, and whether all operations will need to comply with all of the new requirements.

He told the forum the Government is listening to feedback on the bill, and the new regime won't be one-size-fits-all.
