Security committee's final meeting over spy bill

3:33 pm on 22 July 2013

Members of the Intelligence and Security Committee are meeting for the last time on Monday afternoon before reporting back to Parliament on new spy agency legislation.

At present, Prime Minister John Key is relying on independent MP Peter Dunne and his one vote to pass the Government Communications Security Bureau Amdendment Bill which if passed would allow the bureau to spy on New Zealanders.

Mr Key said he would consider a review of the legislation in 2015.

Under the bill, the GCSB would have clear legal authority to assist police, the Security Intelligence Service and the Defence Force. There is also a provision for other agencies to call in the GCSB through an Order in Council.

Mr Key said he would be willing to consider changing that, so it would have to come before Parliament for a vote.

Labour leader David Shearer, a member of the committee, said the whole process has been rushed, with no time to consider any alternatives

The committee will report back to Parliament on Friday.
