The Prime Minister has signalled the Government is unlikely to proceed with a proposal to cut the number of snapper recreational fishers can catch to three a day.
The proposal to reduce the limit from the current nine was included in a discussion document on the matter and has caused controversy among recreational fishers.
John Key says he recognises the proposal is controversial but the matter is being dealt with by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.
He says the minister's job is to listen to the consultation process that is taking place.
"There are lots of different options about what could happen," he says.
Mr Key says there is also lots of emotion about the issue and the Government acknowledges that.
