PM favours different flag, but no referendum planned

Prime Minister John Key says he favours changing New Zealand's flag but does not intend taking any action on the matter.

Mr Key says it would require a referendum to change the flag but he does not intend doing that as there are many more important matters for the Government to deal with.

He says that, personally, he would replace the current flag with the silver fern, but any change has to come from the people of New Zealand being engaged in the process.

"I might happen to have a view - there'll be very many people who have an opposite view to mine."
