MPI failing says Labour

5:45 pm on 20 August 2013

The Labour Party says the Ministry for Primary Industries is failing in a number of areas, and that will become clear in upcoming inquiries.

Two recent contamination scares in dairy products were not picked up in New Zealand products until they were tested offshore.

The dairy contamination scares come after a labelling issue with some meat shipments left containers sitting on wharves in China for weeks.

Labour's Damien O'Connor says the Minister for Primary Industries has to acknowledge that there are serious problems at his ministry.

He says the merging of a number of agencies to form the ministry and budget cut-backs are partly to blame.

But the Minister, Nathan Guy, says MPI is performing well.

He says the ministry responded competently to the contamination scares and is adequately resourced.
