Govt announces initiatives for education under-achievers

The Government has announced a $27 million suite of initiatives aimed at lifting achievement among the poorest students.

The spending, over four-years, is a reallocation of existing funding to a mix of new and expanded programmes.

The money includes $8 million on a second shot at the Maori Education Strategy, which the Auditor-General said was poorly introduced five years ago.

There is also $5 million for a new programme the government says merges the best points of successful initiatives for Maori students and will run at up to 100 schools at a time.

Other initiatives target early literacy and numeracy, teen parents, and NCEA pass rates.
