IRD defaulters to be tracked by their passports

Under a new regulation announced on Wednesday, people who are behind in their child support or student loan payments will be able to be tracked when they apply for or renew a passport.

Under a new information sharing agreement, Internal Affairs will provide Inland Revenue with contact details from adult passport renewals or applications.

Revenue Minister Todd McClay says no matter where people live, they have an obligation to pay their child support and student loan repayments.

He says IRD's experience is that 70% of borrowers in default begin to comply once they are contacted.
