ERA changes seen as breach in international commitments

The Human Rights Commission has told Parliament that proposed changes to employment law breach international human rights agreements.

Revisions to the Employment Relations Amendment Bill would allow employers to walk away from collective bargaining in the event of a stalemate.

The commission told a select committee that breaches commitments made by New Zealand to the International Labour Organisation.

Equal opportunities commissioner Jackie Blue said she cannot understand the Government's motivation for changing the law, given New Zealand's labour market is already one of the most deregulated in the developed world.
