Labour fears elderly state house tenants will be evicted

Labour says the Government's social housing legislation opens the door for older New Zealanders to be thrown out of their state homes.

The Social Services Select Committee has reported the Social Housing Reform (Housing Restructuring and Tenancy Matters Amendment) Bill back to Parliament with some technical amendments.

The bill would extend reviewable tenancies to all Housing New Zealand tenants.

Labour housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says that includes older and disabled New Zealanders and Labour cannot support that.

Housing Minister Nick Smith says vulnerable tenants will not be thrown out of state housing and any changes for those tenants will be made with care and compassion.
