Opposition demands consistency from Speaker

6:37 pm on 18 October 2013

The Opposition says it wants more consistency from the Speaker of the House when he's dealing with the various parties in Parliament.

The comments were prompted by the ejection of the Greens' co-leader, Metiria Turei, from Question Time.

The ejection stemmed from her use of the word "sleazy" when asking a government minister about the SkyCity convention centre deal.

The Speaker, David Carter, ruled that her her question was out of order, but accepted the word sleazy.

Mrs Turei was ejected from the Chamber after she repeatedly questioned his ruling.

Labour and the Greens say MPs should be able to ask the Speaker for clarification in such circumstances, and intend to raise the matter with him.
