Amnesty presents petition on Sri Lanka

12:23 pm on 7 November 2013

Amnesty International presented a 200,000-signature petition to Opposition politicians at Parliament on Tuesday about the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting starting this weekend in Sri Lanka.

Amnesty says in light of serious allegations of human rights abuses by the Sri Lankan government, it wants New Zealand to oppose Sri Lanka taking up the position of chair of the Commonwealth.

MPs from the Green, Labour and New Zealand First parties were present when Amnesty's New Zealand executive director Grant Bayldon gave the petition to Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson David Shearer.

The presentation was gate-crashed by a group wearing masks, protesting against the passage of the Telecommunications (Interception Capability and Security) Bill on Tuesday afternoon.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting will be held from 10-17 November.

The petition was presented at Parliament on Tuesday.
