The number of public servants is set to soon exceed a cap created by the Government.

The State Services Commission has confirmed the number of core public servants has increased by nearly 400 over the past year to 36,474, just one position shy of the Government's cap set in March 2012.

The commission says that cap is expected to be exceeded by more than 200 by June next year.

Salaries in the public sector increased by an average 2.1%, down nearly 1% on 2012 and core turnover decreased to 10.5%.
