Shanks leaving Parliament in January

10:58 am on 10 December 2013

National Party list MP Katrina Shanks has resigned and will not return to Parliament next year.

Instead Mrs Shanks will start work as the chief executive of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand.

She says it has been a privilege to have served as an MP in the Government, but is looking forward to her new role and spending more time with her family.

Party president Peter Goodfellow says Joanne Hayes will replace Mrs Shanks in Parliament.

Mrs Hayes contested Dunedin South for National in 2011, but is now based in Manawatu.

She is of Ngati Porou, Ati Haunui A Paparangi and Rangitane ki Wairarapa descent.
