Foreign Minister Murray McCully says a delegation to Fiji will be seeking assurances that forthcoming elections there will be democratic.
Mr McCully is going there for a ministerial contact group of the Pacific Islands Forum.
He told Morning Report that the Fiji government has made significant progress in the past year and he wants to take a "glass half full approach" to relations with the Pacific nation.
Mr McCully said as well as meeting with Fiji's government, the delegation will visit opposition groups and non-governmental organisations to assess whether the elections are likely to be free and fair.
He said he will also raise human rights with the regime.
