Marine farming reforms likely soon

4:26 pm on 10 April 2010

Reforms to marine farming could be announced by the Government within a week.

Aquaculture New Zealand says red tape and environmental hurdles have meant no new farm applications have been granted for five years.

Last year, a report by a Technical Advisory Group recommended ways to re-invigorate the industry.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says reforms have been developed from that report.

He is not giving details of the reforms, but says the current Resource Management Act is not working for aquaculture and there will be changes.
