House passes Treaty settlement law

2:23 pm on 10 April 2014

Parliament has been sitting under extended hours to pass Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation.

A bill changing the governance structure of the Waitangi National Trust Board also passed its first reading.

Under the Maungaharuru-Tangitu Hapu Claims Settlement Bill, land confiscated by the Crown is returned to the Hawke's Bay hapu. It also provides cultural and commercial redress.

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples told Parliament the bill resolves injustices inflicted by the Crown's acts and omissions under the Treaty, as identified by the Waitangi Tribunal.

This legislation passed unanimously.

The House is currently debating three bills together which, if passed, will settle the claims of Ngati Rangiteaorere, Ngati Rangiwewehi and Tapuika.
