Govt urged to shelve new Maori agency

12:10 pm on 30 July 2008

The Federation of Maori Authorities has urged the Government to shelve plans to create a separate Maori economic development agency.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee is considering a Bill to revamp the the Maori Trust Office - which administers multiply owned Maori land and assets.

It will also set establish Maori Business Aotearoa New Zealand, using 35 million dollars from the Office's general purposes fund.

Federation's chief executive Paul Morgan says the federation supports the intention of the new agency.

But he says the Maori business community have not been consulted and there are questions over funding it from the Maori Trust Office.

Mr Morgan says it is important that the new agency is established appropriately and credibly.
