Full support for 10-year passports

5:14 pm on 18 June 2015

Legislation to extend the validity of adult passports has unanimously passed its first reading in Parliament.

The bill doubles the lifespan of adult passports from the present five years, and increases the passport application fee from $135 to $180.

Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne said 10 years was more convenient.

Children's passports will still have to be renewed every five years, as has always been the case.

The Government administration committee will consider the bill under a shortened process, so it can be passed into law by the end of the year.
