Call for Govt to keep up pace over emissions review

10:46 am on 30 November 2008

Business New Zealand is calling on the Government to keep the pace up with its review of the Emissions Trading Scheme.

The National-led Government is setting up a select committee to overhaul the legislation which created the scheme, just a few months after it passed into law.

National withdrew its support for the Emissions Trading legislation before the election because it insisted the process to pass the law had been rushed.

As part of its deal with the ACT Party the law will be reviewed, as will the science about human induced climate change.

Business New Zealand chief executive Phil O'Reilly says there must be a balance between getting the scheme right and having a very long period of uncertainty.

Mr O'Reilly says many senior officials involved in the initial work have moved on and the proposed review is so wide-ranging it could take longer than intended.
