Bail bill introduced to Parliament

1:57 pm on 12 December 2008

New legislation which would reverse changes to bail laws introduced in 2007 is now before Parliament.

The Bail Amendment Bill would change the test that courts apply, so defendants who present a risk, can be denied bail.

At the moment defendants have to present a so-called "real and significant risk" to be denied bail.

Under current law, Justice Minister Simon Power says even a defendant who has repeatedly breached bail conditions in the past, may not be remanded in custody.

Parliament has been sitting under urgency since Thursday afternoon.
