Senior ministers to discuss economy on Thursday

2:47 pm on 13 January 2009

Prime Minister John Key will meet Finance Minister Bill English and other senior Cabinet ministers on Thursday to discuss the New Zealand economy.

Labour leader Phil Goff says the meeting is a token gesture. Last week, he criticised the Government for failing to outline an effective plan to deal with the economic downturn.

Mr Goff says many Cabinet ministers have been on a prolonged holiday at a time when there is a vital need to tackle economic problems.

However, Mr Key says the meeting has been planned for some weeks.

He says the Government is preparing a number of initiatives on top of an economic stimulus package of tax cuts and infrastructure spending already announced.
