NZ urged to work for safe haven in Sri Lanka

8:23 am on 29 January 2009

The Wellington Tamil Society wants the New Zealand Government to work with the United Nations to set up a safe haven in Sri Lanka.

The United Nations estimates 250,000 Tamil civilians are caught in the crossfire as Sri Lankan troops and Tamil rebels wage fierce battles in the north of the country.

Mani Maniparathy of the Wellington Tamil Society says many of its members have lost relatives in the fighting.

He wants the Government to play a role in the crisis and to work through the UN to create a safe place for civilians.
