Labour energy strategy dropped

9:44 pm on 25 February 2009

The Government plans to do away with parts of the Labour government's energy strategy.

The strategy was produced as a guide to energy development until 2050.

Minister of Energy Gerry Brownlee says it subsumes energy policy into climate change policy and is driven by idealism and ideology.

Mr Brownlee plans to retain environmental requirements but will impose an overriding goal of maximising economic growth.

The announcement has been welcomed by big electricity consumers, but not by environmentalists.
