Flood victims to receive $150,000 from mayoral fund

4:19 pm on 8 March 2009

Far North Mayor Wayne Brown says he will donate the contents of his mayoral fund to help flood victims in his district.

People in the area have expressed fears that government funding to help raise houses above flood level will not be released in time for winter.

The Government pledged $500,000 to lift or move houses that had been damaged in a series of floods in 2007, because the cost was not covered by insurance. However, the work has been delayed while the regional council finalises flood protection plans for Kaeo.

Wayne Brown plans to hand over the $150,000 in his mayoral fund to people with house problems.

He accuses the regional council of mismanaging and neglecting catchment work and says it should be the first to pay. He says the council increased the flood risk in places like Kaeo by stopping the removal of gravel from river beds.

At least 14 homes still need moving or lifting after the floods two years ago.

Council given hurry-up

Civil Defence Minister John Carter has also urged the Northland Regional Council to act soon over the plight of flood victims in Kaeo.

Mr Carter says he is concerned for people who are still living in damaged houses, and expects a speedy response to a letter he has written to the council asking for a progress report and a reason for the delays.

The council said this week that, before committing any funds, it wants to complete a computer model of the floodplain and buy higher ground in Kaeo for people to move to.

Chief executive Ken Paterson said computer modelling of the Kaeo flood plain should be ready in three months.
