In Focus - Prime Minister John Key is not ruling out more government action to tackle the housing shortage in Auckland.

Mr Key told Todd Niall on Morning Report the government recently announced an extra $50 million to be spent on emergency housing, and there may be more announcements on social housing before the end of the year.

Labour wants a state of emergency declared on homelessness and a big increase in spending to alleviate the problem.

But Mr Key said house prices nationally went up 102 percent in the nine years that Labour was previously in government.

"They've gone up 43 percent in the eight years we've been there."If it's an emergency now, why wasn't it an emergency or crisis back then?"
