The current MP, Labour's Trevor Mallard has held the seat since 1993, but will stand on the list in 2017.

Mr Mallard said party leader Andrew Little has signalled to him he would get the position of Speaker if Labour was elected to government.

Ms Andersen ran for Labour in Ōhāriu in 2011, winning about a 1000 votes fewer than the incumbent Peter Dunne.

"Hutt South is made up of strong communities and I will be working hard to to make sure those voices are heard loud and clear," she said.

She has previously worked for the Office of Treaty Settlements, the New Zealand Police and as a private secretary and senior political adviser in Parliament.
