Alcohol tax rise and insulation subsidy take effect

8:20 am on 1 July 2009

An annual tax increase and a new Government subsidy come into effect on 1 July.

The alcohol excise tax makes its yearly rise, which is likely to push up the price of liquor. The Government's home insulation subsidy is also being introduced.

Every year, the excise tax on alcohol is adjusted by the cost of inflation and this year there's an increase of 2.8%.

1 July also marks the start of a campaign to insulate 180,000 houses over the next four years.

The scheme entitles home owners to a grant of up to $1300 or a third of the cost of having insulation installed.
