The United Future Party is promising to abolish tertiary education fees if it is part of the next government.

The party's leader, Peter Dunne, said this would mean students would only have to borrow to fund their living costs, as student allowances would be abolished, to fund the fees.
Mr Dunne said tertiary education was a transformational tool, both for students and for the country.
He said the policy would cost an additional amount of "several hundred million dollars" but it would be phased in over a few years.
