Judge Wilson Whare Isaac has been named as the new chairman of the Waitangi Tribunal.
He was recently appointed Chief Judge of the Maori Land Court.
Courts Minister Georgina te Heuheu says this continues the tradition of the same person fulfilling both roles.
Mrs te Heuheu says Chief Judge Isaac has the background, the experience and the necessary good judgment to deal with the significant issues before the tribunal.
She says she's confident he'll take on the leadership role with distinction.
