Diplomatic corps to return to Waitangi

9:15 pm on 2 February 2010

The diplomatic corps will return to Waitangi this year, for the first time since 1995.

It is expected that about 60 diplomatic representatives to New Zealand will attend the Waitangi Day ceremonies at the invitation of the Governor General.

In 1995 a number of dignitaries were attacked at Waitangi, and the then Governor General Dame Cath Tizard was spat on.

Since then, the diplomatic community has been hosted at Government House in Wellington on Waitangi Day.

Prime Minister John Key says the return of the diplomatic corps to Waitangi is a significant event.
