New Zealand last hosted the event in Auckland in 1990.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games opens on the Gold Coast in Australia on Wednesday.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation Grant Robertson is attending the opening ceremony and plans to talk to officials about what has been involved in hosting.

Mr Robertson said he was certainly not committing to New Zealand making a bid.

He said his trip was a useful opportunity to understand the process behind holding the games.

Mr Robertson said New Zealand had a good record of hosting major sporting events, such as the rugby and cricket world cups, but the Commonwealth Games is another level above.

The first chance New Zealand would have to host is the 2026 Commonwealth Games which will be decided next year.
