MPs' expenses drop towards end of year

The total amount of money spent by MPs on their expenses during the final three months of last year fell from just over $2 million for the previous three months to just under $1.8 million.

Most MPs were on holiday for nearly three weeks of that period.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff's expenditure on domestic road travel quadrupled between the two quarters - from about $17,000 to $70,000.

A spokesperson for Mr Goff has disputed those figures but a Parliamentary Services spokesperson says the September quarter figures didn't include invoices amounting to $52,769 because they weren't received in time.
