A bomb threat caused an evacuation of the Beehive on Monday morning.
A suspicious package was found at 8.15am in a fifth floor office, understood to the office of Agriculture Minister David Carter.
An evacuation order was issued at 8.30am and ministers and their staff were told to leave the building.
Many ministers were in pre-Cabinet meetings and had to hastily arrange alternative venues.
Prime Minister John Key and some other senior ministers retired to the nearby Occidental Tavern while police and bomb disposal experts checked the building.
Traffic diversions were put in place in streets around Parliament with Molesworth Street closed off.
An all-clear was issued at 10.30am.
It has been confirmed to Radio New Zealand that part of the package contained live flies.
Parliament is due to resume on Tuesday.
