Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it recognised meritorious service of those who go above and beyond what was expected.

Public servants were rarely acknowledged for the work they do for New Zealand society, Ms Ardern said.

The new medal will be included in the Royal Honours system.

While there were extensive medal options for the armed forces and uniformed services, there was no medal recognising the work and acheivements of core public servants, she said.

It was anticipated about five will be awarded each year, and will be presented by the State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes.
