Carter officially an independent MP

Te Atatu MP Chris Carter is now officially an independent MP.

Mr Carter is on leave from Parliament after being expelled from the Labour Party caucus for his attempts to undermine leader Phil Goff.

His future as a Labour Party member is in doubt, with the party having started disciplinary proceedings against him.

Parliament's Speaker Lockwood Smith says he has been advised by Labour that Mr Carter is no longer a member of the parliamentary wing of the party.

Dr Smith says the Te Atatu MP will be regarded as an independent MP and adjustments will be made to funding received by Labour and Mr Carter.
