Breach of agreement being checked by Maori Party

6:38 am on 18 April 2011

The Maori Party is investigating whether public attacks by Te Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira breach an agreement made when Mr Harawira left the party.

Mr Harawira is touring the country building up support for a new political party, although the separation deal precludes it from standing candidates against the four sitting Maori Party MPs.

Maori Party president Pem Bird says a party council meeting in Hastings during the weekend heard from members upset at the Mr Harawira's comments.

He told Waatea News that an official investigating the matter will report back in a week and will indicate whether the agreement has been breached and if so, if the breach is exteme enough to allow the party to stand a candidate in Te Tai Tokerau.

Meanwhile, Mr Harawira says the Maori Party has lost a lot of support at the grassroot level.

Mr Harawira says he's been told on numerous occasions as he travels the country that Maori people want an alternative.
