Dry conditions being watched by Govt

6:14 pm on 14 January 2009

The Government is keeping a close eye on dry weather conditions in North Canterbury and on the east coast of the North Island.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister David Carter says recent rainfall has not been enough to remove the risk of drought in these areas.

Mr Carter urges farmers to prepare and plan for the season, including forward planning for winter feed supplies and stock.

He says last year's drought had devastating effects for farmers and the economy and it is important to have contingency plans in place.

He says the Government will continue to monitor both high-risk areas closely.
