Many want mandatory child abuse reporting - minister

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says she is getting a sense that people want to see mandatory reporting of child abuse introduced.

The suggestion is contained in the Government's Green Paper for Vulnerable Children, launched last year, which also recommends the sharing of private information between agencies.

Ms Bennett is holding a series of community meetings around the country to discuss the Green Paper.

She says mandatory reporting has been one of the main points of discussion and while some see potential pitfalls many are warming to the idea.

However Ms Bennett says there are hundreds of submissions on the paper, and she hasn't gone through them all yet to get a firm picture of what the overall response is.
