Backing for ministry register of sexual offenders

MPs say there is merit in creating a register of sexual offenders within the Education Ministry.

A ministerial inquiry is underway after it was revealed a convicted sexual offender worked in a number of schools since his conviction in 2004 for sexual offences against a minor.

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira says the Education Ministry could notify every school board, so they have on record the names, photos and details of sexual offenders, thereby knowing who not to employ.

United Future leader Peter Dunne says it is important to first figure out how the 41-year-old at the centre of the current controversy slipped through the cracks, and if it turns out the failing was the lack of a central register, one should be created.
