Auckland residents concerned about central city brothel

More than 200 people have filed submissions to the Auckland Council to stop a brothel being built in the central city.

The Chow Group wants to build a 15-storey Penthouse Club on Victoria Street, across the road from the SkyCity casino, on the site of the historic Aurora Hotel which was demolished last year.

Nearly all the submissions oppose a resource consent for the brothel, saying it will increase disorder, destroy families and create a seedy central city.

Submitter Mary Paki describes brothels as emotionally, spiritually and financially destructive to society.

Another says if the building goes ahead it will increase crime in the city, while other submitters fear the influence the Penthouse Club could have on children.

Only one submission supports the development.

The council will hold hearings in June to decide whether the brothel can be built.
