Ropes save man from mountain plunge

A man's climbing ropes saved him from plunging several hundred metres when he fell from the Pinnacle Ridge on Mount Ruapehu on Sunday afternoon.

Greenlea Rescue Helicopter pilot Nat Every said the man, 62, an alpine climber, fell only about five metres, thanks to his climbing ropes, but was left dangling until he could be airlifted off the near-vertical cliff face.

He was taken to Waikato hospital.
