A woman has died after falling from a track in the Motatapu Valley near Wanaka.
Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said the police were alerted at 12.09pm that a woman had slipped on the edge of a track and fallen about 40m into a river bed.
He said a search and rescue team and paramedics were sent but the 69-year-old woman, who is believed to have been part of a group walking in the area, was pronounced dead.
The woman was on the Fernburn walking track in a group of 22 walkers from the Wanaka Walking Group.
