A 49-year-old Porirua man injured in an incident in the Wellington suburb of Tawa on Saturday night has died.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson said the man died in Wellington hospital early this morning.

Police had launched a homicide inquiry, and a post-mortem would be carried out today.

The man was found in Tawa's Rossiter Street on Saturday night, just metres from where he had been visiting friends.

"The focus of our investigation to date around scene examinations has been around where the person was found lying," Mr Ferguson said.

The man's family was devastated, he said.

Police were focussing on the identity and movement of people in Rossiter Street on the night of 20 December, and particularly between 6pm and midnight, Mr Ferguson said.

There were several parties in the street that night and the police wanted to hear from everyone who attended, as they tried to piece together the circumstances of the man's injuries.
